**** This
editor questioned. Toppinglift, L. U. ETN2, if the reason for the trip to San
Francisco CA was
that it was closer than Pearl Harbor and fuel was
needed. Herewith his answer: Affirmative, we ran out of fuel at the end
of
our very first DEW
line patrol and guess where the nearest gas station was
that would take
the captains credit card?. It was a
great liberty stop. Every
man on the crew
made it ashore. The duty watch was
individually relieved
by drunks coming
back from shore. After 2200, nobody
bothered to exit via
the
quarterdeck. They just jumped over the
side near the fwd galley hatch
and took off. No one was left behind when we cast off in
the morning - all
hands were
aboard. It was a great example of
teamwork.

**** The
following article appeared in the Honolulu Star Bulletin on December 24, 1957.
2 Dead, 17 Missing “Drill” Said Crash Cause;
Navy Silent. A
surviving officer
was reported to have said a Navy Super Constellation with
23 persons aboard
was holding a fire drill at 1500 feet when all four
engines suddenly
stopped yesterday and it crashed into the ocean. The
crewmen were not available
for direct interview by the press, however, and
the Navy first
denied, then refused to confirm or deny the report. It was not
known whether the
engines stopped operating or because someone
accidentally shut
them off for some other reason. Early
reports from the
rescue scene
indicated the plane exploded on impact with the water. But
Rear Admiral L. B.
Southerland of the Airborne Early Warning Wing said
he didn’t believe
the plane exploded on impact, but may have caught fire.
The plane was a
RADAR-loaded WV-2 from the VW14 attachment of
Barrier Squadron 2
of the Airborne Early Warning Wing stationed at
Barber’s
Point. Survivors Listed. Four survivors and two bodies have been
found. The 17 others aboard are still missing. The Survivors are: 1 –
Commander Guy
Howard, the Executive Officer of the Airborne Early
Warning Squadron
to which the lost plane was attached.
He was aboard to
check on the pilot
during the training flight. 2 –
Lieutenant (jg) John
Thomas Kline,
reported to be the man who said the engines cut out while a
fire drill was in
progress. 3 – Lieutenant (jg) Richard L
Rentschler. 4 –
Franklin A Henry,
an Aviation Electronics Technician, third class.

Kalawao Place, Honolulu, Rentschler,
22, is from Lincoln,
Nebraska and
Henry, 22, is from Kankakee, Illinois.
The survivors were
brought to the
Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station in the crash boat from
that base that
picked them up. Henry and Rentschler
were taken to Tripler
Army Hospital.
Indications were that Howard may have sustained a skull
fracture. In Washington, D.C., Navy Officials said the
casualty list from the
plane will not be
ready until tonight and that it will be made public as soon
as the next of kin
of the men were notified. The big plane
went into the
water yesterday
afternoon about 25 miles North of Kahuku Point,
westernmost tip of
Oahu. Search planes and surface craft are
concentrating
on a 13,500 square
mile area centered 90 miles easterly and 90 miles
westerly. The Coast Guard Cutter Bering Strait
reported sighting what was
believe to be part
of the skin of an aircraft, and the Destroyer Escort
LANSING reported recovering a
half-opened parachute from the sea. One
surface craft
picked up blankets, cups, plane seats, and fiber boards from
the water. It was not known immediately whether the
boards were the type
used in crash
landings or whether they were (No more available at present)
